The competition final was held today in the Royal Irish Academy (RIA). Ten finalists delivered their speeches in front of a panel of judges including Author Louise O’Neill; Board Member of the National Women’s Council Frances Byrne, and Brian Caden from Irish Aid, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Winning finalists Lauren and Jane will travel with their teachers to visit Malawi and see first-hand ActionAid’s Irish Aid funded women’s rights programme.
“This is the second ActionAid Speech Writing Competition and again I am truly impressed by the standard of speech writing and delivery. All students showed excellent analysis of the challenges faced by ActionAid and other NGOs in developing countries. Congratulations to Lauren and Jane, winners of a close fought competition through their combination of content and presentation skills.”
Jane and Lauren were chosen out of more than 70 students, aged 14 to 17, from over 30 schools across the country who entered the competition. There were three speech topics to choose from which focused on European Year for Development, Human Rights Based Approach to Development and Women’s Rights.

Irish Aid funds an ActionAid Women’s Rights programme in Kenya, Malawi, Nepal and Vietnam. ActionAid uses this funding to work with vulnerable communities in an effort to end early girl marriage, prevent gender based violence, gain land rights for women and help women and girls receive an education.
