Creepy Crawley Visitors Launch Galway Science festival

Students and teachers got up close to some of world’s most notorious creatures. Dr Michel Dugon from NUIG zoology department visited Colasite Einde along with a collection of creatures that included Scorpions, Millipedes, Snakes, Tarantulas and giant snails. Students were able to hold or touch many of the creatures and learned how each creature was adapted to survive in their natural habitat. Dr Dugon, who features on RTE’s Bug Hunters program, was also able to inform the students that there are many myths associated with some of the creatures. For example, a Tarantulas’ bite is likely to cause symptoms of a 24 hour cold rather than death!

The visit is just the first of many events happening across Galway over the next week. We will have another visiting presenter but students should see the Sci fest website for details for the details of events and the chance to win an ipod. http://scifest.ie
