Coláiste Éinde’s strong hurling tradition was to the fore with former staff member and Galway All Ireland hurling sub, Cyril Donnellan and Performance Analyst and key member of the Galway backroom team past pupil, David Morris, in attendance.

Coláiste Éinde’s strong hurling tradition was to the fore with many staff including including teachers David Tierney, Tom Fox and Brian Fahy having represented Galway on county and university teams.

Hurling Greats

In an inspirational speech reminiscent of his famous acceptance speech, Joe Connolly, Captain of the Galway’s 1980 All Ireland winning team, remembered his friend, former teacher and past pupil, the late Joe McDonagh. He encouraged the students to make the most of their talents in whatever area life takes them. Team manager, Micheál Donoghue, emphasised the importance of focus and determination while past pupil David Morris credited the school with imbuing him with the values of tolerance and respect. John Hanbury, who thanked the school for the key role it played in shaping him both as a hurler and in a broader sense as a person, received a rapturous applause from his young audience.

In a lovely touch, John’s former English teacher, Gerry Hanberry read a poem he composed for his star past pupil’s return to his Alma Mater.

Speaking at the welcome reception, School Principal, Deirbhle Quinn said the staff and students were ‘over the moon’ to welcome the Liam MacCarthy trophy.

“We congratulate the team once again on their fantastic achievement in winning the All-Ireland and we very much hope that your journey can be an inspiration to the next generation of hurlers who are sitting here listening to you today”
