Puplic Speaking

Sorcha Crumlish, Jessica McDonagh and Ailbhe-Lisa Hanney, second year students from Coláiste Éinde, were runners-up in the University Women Graduates’ Association Public Speaking Competition on Wednesday February 8th in NUIG. This competition is open to girls under 15 years of age. It is unique in that it gives the students 30 minutes to write a speech on an unseen aspect of a topic they have chosen. This year’s topics included: Modern Living and Technology, Leisure, Family Relationships, Careers and Employment, Travel and The Environment. Jessica gave an enthusiastic delivery and some food for thought on the aspect “Why talk when you can text?” Ailbhe-Lisa’s speech on “The hobby I really enjoy” provided an insight into the passion and dedication of her school’s basketball team. Finally, Sorcha delved into a topic beyond her years and examined whether “Governments should limit the amount of cars on the road”. The girls were commended by the adjudicators for their performance and in particular their use of humour.
