Sensory Garden

A sensory garden was officially unveiled in Coláiste Éinde last week to commemorate the schools’ trip to the Paralympics in September 2012.  A total of eighty students worked together in building this sensory garden to commemorate the experience of the Paralympics.  Many staff also helped out, along with great help from the School Completion Programme, who were heavily involved in its design and build.

An unsightly, dormant space towards the rear of the school was transformed into a beautiful, restful oasis which draws on the five senses of sight, smell, sound, touch and taste.  The Junior Cert Schools Programme were instrumental in creating beautiful wall mosaics to add to the garden, using themes such as the legend of the Táin Bó Cuailgne, tribal art and sea creatures.  Artist Francis Kilcommins worked with the students to create these beautiful works of art.  The addition of a water feature and the dawn chorus lends a sense of tranquillity to the garden.

This space is a functional garden which can be enjoyed by all students and staff in Coláiste Éinde.  It can be used by teachers during the school day to teach a class or by exam students as a place of reflection.

Donations were gratefully accepted from Dangan Nurseries and Radharc Landscaping.

The school also fundraised for Paralympic Ireland, and raised €1200 for the charity.  The garden was officially opened last Friday, 22nd of February, by the director of Paralympic Ireland, Liam Harvison, and Barna native Rena McCarron-Rooney, who represented Ireland in table tennis in the London Olympic Games.

Special thanks to all the staff, particularly Phelim Conway (co-ordinator), Ursula Diamond (art director) and William O’Connor (School Completion), and the many students who participated in the project as a whole.
