Maths Week 16

The tenth annual Maths week was celebrated in Coláiste Éinde with a variety of activities aimed at promoting awareness and an appreciation of Maths. A number of activities were organized throughout the week involving all year groups including table quizzes, drop everything and Sudoku and Math’s puzzles which were displayed across the school.

The “Estimate the number of Jelly Beans in the jar” proved very popular with hundreds of entries. First year classes had the opportunity to participate in a Maths trail around the school grounds. All students had the opportunity to work in groups and experience the use of Maths in the real world, while testing their problem solving and estimation skills. First year computer classes competed against other secondary schools around the country on Manga High, a Math’s based computer program.

A small group of first year students had the opportunity to take part in an Exploring Maths trail around the aquarium led by a dedicated member of the education team before heading to the nautilus classroom for a maths challenge.

Our fourth year Physics and Applied Maths classes attended a workshop run by Dr.Fernando Blasco, a mathematician and lecturer at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, interested in recreational maths and magic. He used magic to introduce the students to topics such as prime numbers, knot theory, sudoku, topology, number systems, mind games, Rubik’s cube, calendars and quick calculations.

All in all it was a very busy and exciting week. Congratulations to all those involved.
