National Poetry Aloud Senior Competition Winner

The finals of the annual all-Ireland Poetry Aloud competition took place on Friday 5th Dec in the National Library, Dublin with Coláiste Éinde fourth year student Cian Siggins emerging as the winner of the Senior Category. The competition involves students learning a series of poems by heart and delivering them in a meaningful and appropriate style to a panel of judges and a large audience. The local heats began in October with almost two thousand students from all parts of Ireland, north and south, taking part. The standard of delivery is always very high particularly in the semi-finals and final and it takes great skill and no small amount of courage to perform well at this level. Cian impressed the judges in the final with his splendid delivery of Paula Meehan’s ‘My Father Perceived as a Vision of St Francis’ and his personal choice ‘More Light, More Light’ by Anthony Hecht.

Cian Siggins won a handsome cash prize for himself and a ‘shelf of books’ for the school library. The final was judged by poet Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Fiach Mac Conghail, Director of the Abbey Theatre and Maureen Kennelly, Director of Poetry Ireland.

Coláiste Éinde English teacher, Gerard Hanberry, himself a published prizewinning poet, was Cian’s mentor and he expressed delight at his student’s success. School Principal Dearbhla Quinn also praised Cian Siggins on his great achievement and thanked Mr Hanberry for his efforts over the years to achieve success in this highly prestigious competition.
