Transition Year

The Transition Year Programme is a unique optional one year programme that promotes the personal, social, vocational and educational development of students and prepares them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society. Transition Year provides a bridge to enable students to make the transition from the more dependent type of learning associated with Junior Cycle to the more independent learning environment associated with Senior Cycle. It encourages the development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem solving skills.

The Transition Year curriculum is made up of a number of layers which offer opportunities for students to get hands-on practise in core subjects such as English, Maths, Gaeilge and their European Language. Students also sample senior cycle optional subjects in rotation, which can help them make a more informed decision before selecting subjects at Leaving Certificate. At the end of Transition Year students move into Fifth Year to begin the two-year Leaving Certidicate programme.

Transition Year is an optional programme and expressions of interest are sought when students are nearing the end of Third Year. Students who do not enrol in Transition Year move directly from Third Year to Fifth Year following compleition of their Junior Cycle.
